History, Ritual & Reinvention

Long before Joytown became a sanctuary for healing, retreats, and transformation, this land had already lived many lives. Nestled in an old-growth aspen grove at 6,600 feet in Bear Creek Canyon, the area has always drawn people seeking connection, pleasure, reflection, and experiences outside the ordinary.

The Ute people once came here to hunt, gather, and live close to the water. In the late 1800s, the canyon became known as Joytown: a destination where people escaped the city to dance, bathe in mineral waters, gather around fire, picnic by the creek, and reconnect with something more alive inside themselves. Dance halls, taverns, music, revelry, and a touch of rebellion all became part of the canyon’s history. It was a place where people came to let something loosen and remember their bodies, spirits and hearts.

Over time, the land changed names and identities, eventually becoming present-day Idledale. But the deeper thread beneath it all remained the same: this canyon has always been a place where people gather to reconnect with themselves, each other, nature, pleasure, healing, and possibility.

Today, Mel and Elisa continue that legacy in a deeply intentional way through Joytown. Every part of the property has been thoughtfully shaped to support embodiment, ritual, intimacy, beauty, rest, and transformation. The land remembers, and Joytown honors that history by creating spaces where connection, healing, pleasure, and being fully alive are welcomed as sacred parts of the human experience.
